Legend of Zelda 2D vs. 3D Showdown | PAX East 2024
The Legend of Zelda started got its start in the 8-bit era, and after multiple 2D releases, it successfully made the jump to 3D. Having a series known for two completely different styles begs the question: Which one reigns supreme? Join the Zelda Universe team for a spirited debate on which is better, 2D or 3D Zelda. Audience participation is encouraged. After hearing persuasive statements from both sides, you can cast your vote for Team 2D or Team 3D. Since we are talking about the whole Zelda series, we're also throwing in some trivia questions for your chance to win prizes!

A new image of the official Zelda timeline has been shared featuring Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom which appears to suggest that the duology are separate from the rest of the current timeline as we know it.

Unlike Link’s Awakening, which released before Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, both Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons launched afterward in 2001. As a result, many characters who appear in those games like Tingle, King Zora, and the like – appear in one of the two games. On top of that, Oracle of Ages and Seasons have their own unique villains. The evil general Onox is Oracle of Seasons’ antagonist, and he wields a big ball and chain. Then there’s Veran, an evil sorceress who can possess anyone she chooses, and the main antagonist of Oracle of Ages. Neither of these characters are ever seen in a Zelda game again, and it’d certainly be neat to see what they’d look like in modern 3D graphics. Even if they do have to be chibi!

Here’s what Aonuma shared in an interview with The Washington Post:

“I’ve never really made a game where you think of the story first and then go into gameplay. First when you think of the gameplay, what you’re trying to think of after that is how you can get players to understand that gameplay.

The story becomes used as a vessel because it has a beginning and end and the player moves through it. I think it would actually be kind of difficult to do the reverse and start with the story, then try to match the gameplay mechanics to that.”
